Homes will be illuminated with colour this Christmas.

Traditional warm white lights are taking a backseat this Christmas in favour of multi-coloured lights.

More than half (54 per cent) of Brits will cast aside their traditional warm white lights and choose to illuminate their homes with colour, a new study by Homebase has found.

The most colourful Christmas will take place in Liverpool where 65 per cent of residents plan to deck the walls of their homes with colourful lights. This is closely followed by London (64 per cent) and Coventry (62 per cent). From a combination of greens and reds to a rainbow of colour, these three cities are set to provide a technicolour treat for onlookers in the lead up to the big day.

But, not everyone is ready to commit to a colourful Christmas just yet. Homebase's survey reveals that in Belfast, 32 per cent of residents prefer the classic look, using only white lights to liven up their homes for Christmas. And, in the spirit of simplicity, 56 per cent of those in Aberdeen would never put Christmas lights up at all.

'Party Architect' to the Royals, Johnny Roxburgh, says colourful lights are an easy way to add festive flair to your indoor setting, and will give your outdoors a retro Christmas feel, too.

'People normally steer clear of coloured lights but sometimes, too much harsh white light can end up looking a bit clinical and tired,' Johnny says in collaboration with Habitat. 'Last year, I dressed my huge olive tree in my front garden with sparkly multi-coloured lights in glorious 50s colours, which I bought in Germany two years ago. It looked so cheerful, and I like to think it put a smile on people's faces on those bleak days last winter. I will be doing the same this year!'

Regardless of whether you prefer white or colourful lights, when thinking about glowing up your home, Escape to the Chateau stars Dick and Angel Strawbridge, who star in Homebase's 2021 Christmas advert, say lights are the perfect way to make your home stand out at Christmas.

'Lighting can make any space feel completely magical, especially at Christmas time. The warm glow of lots of twinkly lights really sets the scene and creates a foundation for your creativity,' say Dick and Angel. 'Whether you hang lights in a window, wind around your tree, or intermingle with foliage on a mantelpiece, your home will be transformed into a winter wonderland that can't help but make you smile.'
