Car headlights play a major role in automobile safety, but headlights sometimes cease to work. Instead of taking your car/motorcycle to the nearby mechanic to replace the headlight bulbs, following a few simple steps will help you replace the headlight bulb with ease.

Before moving to the steps, there are a few things to understand and out of which, the most important one is the type of headlight bulb.

For a car with a factory-fitted LED headlight unit, it is advisable to visit an authorised dealership for replacing the worn-out headlights. However, these headlight units are designed to work beyond the lifetime of the car and usually won't wear out as fast as regular halogen bulbs.

Since most cars in India still use halogen headlight bulbs, we shall discuss the steps to replace the halogen bulb in your car.

Also, halogen bulbs have a life of around 2,000 hours, so they are most likely to get replaced more often during the lifetime of a car/motorcycle. In comparison, LED bulbs last around 25,000 hours and some studies have also shown double this number.

Before opening the bonnet of your car you will also require a pair of latex gloves as oils and salt from the skin will cause heat to concentrate and damage the bulb. This uneven heating of the capsule can also cause the bulb to shatter.

Headlight bulbs are not as simple as lighting bulbs at home. They come in various sizes and shapes such as H1, H3, H4, H7, H8, H10, H11, H14 etc. So, it is essential to understand the manufacturer's recommended specification of the bulb before proceeding with this 'Mission'.

Make sure you turn off the car and wait until the car cools down to open the bonnet.

Once the bonnet is opened, remove the headlamp connection that is located exactly behind the headlights. Sometimes, a dust cover could be present, so carefully remove the dust cover.

Now, gently remove the damaged bulb and replace it with the new bulb. While doing this, it is highly recommended to handle the new bulb wearing the above-mentioned latex gloves, unless you want to repeat the procedure in a short period of time.

Now, put back the dust cover and connect the headlamp connection.

Test the new bulbs by turning on your car and headlamps. If the newly replaced bulb is not working, check the wiring or the filament of the bulb.

Headlights are often overlooked elements, however, many people take their precious time to the mechanic shop to replace a simple headlight bulb. The above steps will help every novice automobile user to replace the headlight bulb with ease.
