Let's Find Out, RTÉjr's science program, has another great experiment for you to try.

The show was produced with our friends at the Irish Science Foundation and hosted by scientists Mark and Amy on the spacecraft Curiosity-captained by a furry captain named Zoom!

Listen to RTÉjr at 7am and 2.30pm on weekdays, or watch it on RTÉ Player anytime!

Zoom likes wind, but she wants to know how to "catch the wind" to create energy. So Daire and Siofra showed Zoom how micro-turbines can generate enough electricity to power a light.

Make sure you have adult supervision to conduct any scientific experiments!

Is the LED light on?

If the LED light does not light up, you may need to modify the blades on the wind turbine, this time fold the left corner down.

Try again now. Was it useful this time?

Once you start working, you can make your own blade with the provided colored cards. You can make them larger or smaller or different shapes. Use a pen, ruler, and scissors to help make your wind wheel.

These fireflies use wind power to power LED bulbs. You can provide wind power through a hairdryer or fan.

With enough wind and the right blade shape, the wind wheel starts to rotate very fast. This rotation causes a rod in the generator to rotate, and this movement is converted into electrical energy in the generator, which is used to light the bulb.

*Note: If you can't get enough spin from your wind source, see if you can try another one or replace the wind wheel.
