Although slightly more expensive upfront, switching to LED light bulbs will pay for themselves in months

As the price of energy only looks set to rise, people are desperate for any way to shave money off household bills. Whether it’s by turning off phone chargers on standby, boiling a flask of water every morning to stop boiling a kettle for each individual cup of tea, or switching to an air fryer , it all adds up.

There’s another way which could shave 75% off the energy costs involved in lighting your house. British Gas suggests switching all the bulbs in your house to LEDs.

Though slightly more expensive upfront, switching to LEDs could save up to 75% on energy costs spent on lighting your house. They’re much more efficient than traditional bulbs and last longer.

According to Simply LED , a standard 40W GLS pearl filament bulb costs £1.29, while an equivalent 5W LED GLS costs £5.40. However, an LED bulb has the average rated life of 20,000 hours, while the filament bulb only lasts for 1,000 hours.

That means that one LED bulb lasts as long as 20 traditional bulbs, meaning over 20,000 hours, the cost racks up to £5.40 for an LED bulb and £25.80 for a traditional bulb. The more expensive upfront cost is more than worth it.

The most obvious benefit though, is that an LED bulb using only five watts does the same job as a traditional bulb using 40 watts of energy. Based on costs from October 1, the LED bulb will cost £52 over its lifetime (20,000 hours), while a traditional lightbulb will cost £416 over the same time.

There’s no need to stress too much though. Let’s say you have a light on for eight hours per day, we’re talking about almost seven years worth, but it’s still worth making the switch to save that money.

You’ll still save around £50 per year. You can buy LED light bulbs pretty much anywhere, but they’re available cheap on Amazon for ease.
